HTC to launch limited number of smartphones in 2018, mid-range U11+ expected in January : News, News

After some years of sluggishness, HTC seems to have found its stride once again this year after launching the HTC U11, U11+ and U11 Life, which have been met with largely positive reviews. Of course, there was also the HTC U Ultra early this year that was quite skippable. The company has kept its launches limited this year and is looking to do the same in 2018 as well as it plans to focus its R&D and marketing efforts on high-end and upper mid-range models.

Digitime reports based on industry sources in Taiwan that HTC will have limited launches next year as it struggles to make a comeback in the industry. It will kick things off with a stripped down version of the U11+ in January. The upcoming smartphone will feature mid-range specifications inside a near bezel-less display. As 18:9 displays have become the new industry standard, one expects to see companies bring them down to mid-range and budget segments even more starting next year. From what rumours suggest, the “lite” version of the HTC U11+ is tipped to be powered by a Snapdragon 652 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The phone is also expected to keep the same 5.99-inch 18:9 display as the HTC U11+.

Following this, HTC is reported to launch its next flagship smartphone and successor to the U11, the U12. As of now, there is no word on when the U12 will be unveiled, but we could see a launch sometime around May, similar to the U11 this year. The report adds that the HTC U12 will sport a 4K display, Snapdragon 845 processor, and a dual rear camera system, among other things. This keeps in line with a report last month that suggested HTC will launch five to six smartphones in 2018, with at least one of them sporting dual cameras.

Chialin Chang, President of HTC confirmed in November that the company will be re-entering the dual-camera smartphone arena next year. “We’ll definitely be releasing a dual-camera phone next year, but we’ll need to figure out how to make this feature stand out,” he said in a media interview. It makes sense for the U12 to be the first smartphone from HTC in 2018 to come with dual cameras. The company has notably not included a dual rear camera setup in any of its smartphones launched this year.
